The Best Lego Designs

Legos are toys, but they also inspire amazing designs. LEGO artists use small plastic bricks to create everything from robots to architecture. Even the engineers of the company design new elements that allow builders to build more complicated models. Erik Varszegi is a Master Builder at the Lego Group, Billund, Denmark. He has designed a brand new element to be used this year, the curving slope. It lets Lego users create more slanted designs while staying within the company’s strict color palette. The slopes can be used to create more dynamic shapes, for example, an incline staircase.

Some Lego sets are the result of professional designers’ work and others are the product of the well-known Lego Ideas program. The Ideas line offers anyone the chance to create a set, and then get it built, granting fame and a portion of sales to any designer who can convince 10,000 of their peers that their idea is worthy to be made into a production. It’s not surprising that the most extravagant and stunning sets usually garner the most attention — particularly when they feature iconic scenes or characters from movies, TV shows or from the real world.

Among the best Lego designs are two iconic space-themed models: the NASA space shuttle Discovery and one of the Hubble Telescope. Each model comes with display plaques and a small Lego version of the scientist that designed the telescope. Other impressive models include frames of a rainbow, a steampunk dragon and a model of the Palace of Westminster.
